Suzanne Schleck

Suzanne SchleckSuzanne earned a B.A. in art from the University of Missouri in 1968. A professional calligrapher, she experienced a call to paint icons in 1989, and approached Fr. Walsted (whom she had read about in Episcopal Life) for guidance. He very generously agreed to teach Suzanne, and she has apprenticed with him since that time.

Her icons hang in numerous churches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as private homes. Suzanne was commissioned by Bishop David Joslin to create an icon of the Revs. John Talbot and George Keith, first missionary priests to NJ, in celebration of the 300th anniversary of severalparishes in the Diocese of New Jersey.

She has also begun a series of icons of the women on the Episcopal Calendar, including Julian of Norwich, Evelyn Underhill, Sojourner Truth, Margaret of Scotland, and Hilda of Whitby. Suzanne is a public school art teacher, and received a grant for artist/educators in 2000 from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. She is a parishioner of Christ Church, Toms River, New Jersey, and an associate of the Community of St. Mary.
